Choose a file type and formatting option and click on the 'Start' button to format the disk. Simply right-click its icon from My Computer and from the context menu, click on the 'Format' option. There are two separate versions listed on the Seagate site, one for macOS 10.10 to 10.15, and another for the Macs running an Apple silicon chip. Windows also let us format an external device like SD card, pen drive, etc. If you are really, absolutely sure you want to wipe out your main disk, detach all external drives first and then you can use sudo dd if/dev/zero of/dev/disk0 bs65536 and leave it to run a few seconds. Or, if you bought an external hard drive from Seagate, it should come with Paragon Driver to let you read and write data interchangeably on Windows and Mac without formatting the drive. Here’s a guide to macOS disk permissions to help you understand the technical concepts. Your hard drive is typically called Macintosh HD, and you'll see it in the left sidebar. Select your hard drive and click Partition. This lets you set the permissions to Read & Write to yourself while keeping the read-only for other users. To do so, press Command + Spacebar, type disk utility, and then click Disk Utility in the search results. If this is a drive you formatted yourself, you can change the individual permissions in the box above. You won’t see this option if the external storage is used as a boot drive or a Time Machine backup drive.
